We’ve known it for years, but dentists have the best jobs, literally! According to a study from U.S. News and World Report’s 2017, Dentists are ranked as the top career in America.
Being a dentist was the second-best job in 2016 and the best job in 2015. This year, orthodontist came in fifth, after leading the rankings in 2016, and dental hygienist came in at No. 32. Jobs are scored on seven measures including median salary, employment rate, future job prospects, work-life balance and stress level.
If you are looking to change careers, the job prospects in dentistry are strong. The demand for dentists will increase over 18% according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics figures cited by U.S. News which translates to an estimated 23,000 new jobs in the coming years. Dr. Owen says, “I love being a dentist. There really is no such thing as an average day. Every day has new challenges and new opportunities. Each patient brings in a unique story.”
It is also interesting to note that of the top 100 jobs on the list, more than 50% were related to health care. “Health care jobs often require a human element, so they can’t be exported or entirely replaced by robots – at least not yet,” said Susannah Snider, personal finance editor at U.S. News. “Continued growth in the health care sector, low unemployment rates and high salaries make these jobs especially desirable. Plus, individuals can pursue a range of health care positions that require varying levels of skill and education.”
